Professor Omar Yaghi's research is primarily concerned with the design and synthesis of new classes of porous materials. These include metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), which exhibit exceptionally high surface areas and tunable structures. His group focuses on the modular construction of these frameworks for applications in carbon dioxide capture, hydrogen and methane storage, water harvesting from desert air, and catalysis. The research combines organic and inorganic synthesis with crystallography, gas sorption analysis, and computational modeling. His group also integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to accelerate the discovery and optimization of novel materials. He plays a leading role in several major research initiatives, including the Kavli Energy NanoSciences Institute (Kavli ENSI), which investigates energy transformation at the molecular level; the California Research Alliance by BASF (CARA), which supports collaborative academia-industry innovations; and the Bakar Institute of Digital Materials for the Planet (BIDMaP), which aims to develop cost-efficient, deployable MOFs and COFs to mitigate the impacts of climate change. His lab has established extensive synthetic and analytical capabilities, enabling the rapid development and characterization of next-generation reticular materials.
