Dr. Lane W. Martin joins the faculty of Berkeley MSE as an Associate Professor on July 1, 2014. Dr. Martin received his B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University in Dec. 2003 and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in May 2006 and 2008, respectively, all in Materials Science and Engineering. Following his graduate work, Dr. Martin was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Quantum Materials Group, Materials Science Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 2008 – 2009. In August 2009, Dr. Martin started as an Assistant Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. During this time at Illinois, Dr. Martin’s research focused on three main areas: 1) the science and engineering of thermal, electronic, and magnetic properties of materials for applications ranging from waste heat energy conversion to solid state cooling to electron emission, 2) the design and implementation of multi-functional materials for applications such as logic, memories, and sensing, and 3) the development of oxide materials for solar energy conversion including photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Dr. Martin has published >90 papers and his work has been cited over 4,550 times. Lane’s work has garnered a number of awards including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2013), the Dean’s Award for Research Excellence for the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (2013), the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2012), and the Army Research Office Young Investigator Program Award (2010) and he has been featured in interviews on the importance of basic science research with the Science Coalition, MSNBC, Science, the Huffington Post, and others.
