Why did you choose to study MSE?
I chose MSE because I have always been interested in energy and other sustainability efforts. When looking at different majors I was intrigued by the ability of materials scientists to invent novel materials that can change anything from how to sustainably create plastic to improving drug delivery methods!
What do you like most about MSE?
I love how MSE is so versatile and how materials scientists learn fundamental engineering principles that can be applied to so many different fields. I initially wanted to look into how to make eco-friendly plastics and biodegradable material to prevent pollution, but I was introduced to semiconductors and electronic materials and their impact on the energy systems in our everyday lives. The vastness of the fields you can work in leaves a lot of room for discovery and exploration!
Any interesting projects/research you are working on now that you’d like to share?
I am currently working on synthesizing thin film gallium nitride and am super excited for the potential of this material. Gallium nitride is super fascinating and the potential it has to create more efficient energy systems and electronic applications is a huge motivator in my work.
What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I love traveling and experiencing new cultures. One of my bucket list goals is to visit every continent at least once:)
What are your future plans?
I was recently just admitted to the 5th Year Master's Program here at Berkeley and I am excited to hopefully publish my work as a graduate student! After receiving my Master's I hope to enter industry and work in an energy or sustainability company.
