In Memoriam: Professor Robert “Pete” Bragg

Robert Henry “Pete” Bragg, Jr., a professor emeritus in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in College of Engineering at UC Berkeley, passed away on October 3, 2017, at the age of 98. Professor Bragg came to UC Berkeley in June of 1969, after graduating with a PhD in Physics from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1960, and subsequently working 9 years at Lockheed Martin Missile and Space. He retired from the Berkeley faculty in 1987, after a career that included service as Department Chair from 1987 to 1981. His research interests included X-Ray crystallography, eutectic solidification, and the properties of carbon materials. He made numerous contributions to supporting and expanding diversity in his profession and on the Berkeley campus. He received several honors and distinctions in his career including being named as a fellow of the National Society of Black Physicists. More information about his life and career can be found here.
